Recursive Image Search Starting with a Transparent PNG

This video by Sebastian Schmieg involved doing a recursive search by image, starting with a transparent png file (400?225px). The video plays at 12 fps and has 2951 images in it.

When asked how he avoided loops, he explains on his Vimeo page:

[...] if the image has been used before, I choose the next-highest. otherwise it would indeed loop pretty quickly, or even end up bouncing back and forth between two images.
