With people trusting their GPS to take them to their destination -- yet lacking the knowledge on how the system works -- more and more of them are ending up dead as a result of it. In California's Death Valley, a place where technology and tragedy mix with the deadly heat of summer in new and unexpected ways, wilderness coordinator Charlie Callagan is now calling it "Death by GPS".

With another potentially deadly summer season approaching, Death Valley managers now are adding heat danger warnings to dozens of new wayside exhibits and working with technology companies to remove closed and hazardous roads from GPS units. They also have posted warnings on the park's website, telling visitors not to rely on cell phones or GPS units.
