Music is a Drug and We're Addicted to It

According to a paper by Canadian researchers at McGill University, music has addictive qualities, capable of producing feelings of euphoria and craving by stimulating the flow of dopamine.

According to the scientists involved, these findings help "to explain why music is of such high value across all human societies". ars technica has an article which explains the paper in laymen terms.
