According to Lesley Ciarula Taylor of the Toronto Star, Star Trek's universal translator -- a plot gimmick that allowed aliens from different cultures to speak colloquial English with our intergalactic protagonists -- is getting closer to becoming a reality:

The powerful and increasingly versatile Google Translate has hitched its technology to a smartphone application to spawn Conversation Mode, which translates what you say into another language and speaks it back.

Right now, the device can only understand a limited number of languages and requires you to speak slowly and crystal clear, so human translators shouldn't worry... yet.
