FAA: Hand-Held Lasers Pointed at Aircraft's Cockpits is a Serious Safety Problem

With lasers getting more and more powerful -- and cheaper to own -- there has been an increase of people pointing them at planes, which has Federal Aviation Administration officials worried. Even at great distances, especially at night, the intense laser light can temporarily blind pilots causing all sorts of problems, including with landing.

"It sounds silly," explains FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt in a post on a Transportation Department blog, "but this is a serious problem."
