Five Billionth Device About to Plug into Internet

John Cox, from NetworkWorld, notes that sometimes this month, the five billionth device will be plugged into the Internet. And in ten years, there will likely be four times as many, at least according to IMS Research, which tracks the installed base of equipment that can access the Internet.

The article points out that while a chunk of this traffic will be from mobile phones and new types of consumer electronics, a significant portion will be from invisible devices (any kind of machine-to-machine communication for smart grids, energy management, etc.). Currently, over 1 billion computers connect to the Internet on a regular basis.
