The Pirate Party of Canada has received official party status. They advocate for the free sharing of music and movies for personal use and also want Internet surveillance by government restricted and call for a ban on software and pharmaceutical patents, which they say hinder development. The fledging pirates is a global phenomenon with parties throughout Scandinavia and Europe. In last summer's European Parliament election, the Swedish pirates received more than 7% of the vote, winning them two seats.
