Mac owners will be familiar with the Mac start-up sound. It was designed by engineer Jim Reekes who quietly installed it into the hardware of the Quadra 700, a machine that in 1991 sported a built-in ethernet and the powerful 68040 CPU (at least for its time), all for a meagre $7,000. Steve Jobs has wanted that sound with in a Mac ever since.
