The Netherlands were able to achieve their goal of running their trains on 100% renewable energy a year ahead of schedule. Reportedly, the yearly 1.2 billion kWh of electricity required for operation were produced entirely by wind turbines. To celebrate, they strapped the Dutch-equivalent of Sir Topham Hatt to a windmill and set it spinning.

The goal was accomplished in partnership with Eneco, a Dutch sustainable energy supplier. According to Eneco account manager Michel Kerkhof “What makes this contract and partnership unique is that a whole sector decreases its CO2 footprint enormously and sets an example for other sectors to follow.”
