Magick 101

How to get what you want

It's not complicated. Compose a sentence describing your desire, then sit down and write it twenty times a day. That's it.

Well, almost. There's a few caveats:

* Phrase the sentence as if you already have what it is you want.
* Write by hand -- no typing at a keyboard.
* Do it every day without fail.
* Do only one goal at a time.
* Keep it short and simple.

Your desire can be literally anything, but keep in mind that the more realistic -- that is, the smaller the step from where you are to where you want to be -- the faster you'll see results. If you are penniless and your sentence is "I am the richest person in the world," you may die of old age before you get it. Better to work your way there in increments. Maybe start with "I have a reliable income."

It seems silly, but this is a surprisingly powerful technique. You don't even have to believe it will work for it to work. You do have to have patience, though. It might work quickly, but it might also take a while.

It's magick!

Aleister Crowley defined "magick" as "any act intentionally performed in order to cause a change in reality in accordance with one's will." Say what you want about the man (I say he was ultra-creepy), there's no denying his mad genius or the value of his definition. Note that in this sense "magick" does not solely (or even primarily) involve anything paranormal. In fact, much of applied science is actually magick that has been explained in material terms. See the history of hypnotism for a dramatic example of this.

The fundamental principle that all magick is based on is "like begets like" (or, stated in Biblical terms, "as above, so below"). This truth is so obvious that it is expressed in dozens of common sayings, such as "birds of a feather flock together." In other words, you get what you give (have). The Golden Rule is a magickal law. I have now revealed to you the innermost secret teaching of every magickal society in man's history. (In other times and places I would be put to death for doing that.) You don't have to actually "have" in order to get, though. All you have to do is behave as if you have it.

The technique I described is a magickal ritual stripped of all extraneous frills. Specifically, it's an invocation. You are reprogramming your mind in order to elicit specific changes in your behavior. It is those behavioral changes that bring your desires to you. You see, every day you are surrounded by hundreds, maybe thousands, of opportunities of all kinds. You don't even notice (or care about) the vast majority of these, but if you "tune" yourself to be in sympathy with the ones you want, you begin to see and cultivate them.

We are all meat robots. Not entirely, of course. We have spirituality, creativity, and the capacity for unexpected action. 99% of the time, though, we're running on autopilot. We follow prewritten scripts that have been taught to us by our bodies, family, friends, society, and personal experiences. We call it "instinct" or "acting naturally" (note the double meaning of the word "acting" in there) but it's nothing of the sort. Most people strongly reject this notion, but talk to any psychologist about this and you'll see that it's not actually a radical idea at all. Psychotherapy is based on precisely this notion.

We don't have to simply accept the programs handed to us. We can write our own! It is done very simply: through repetition. The reason you write that sentence 20 times in a row, and do it every day, is to set up the repetition. You will accept and, on some level, believe anything that you have heard stated frequently enough. This is the key to all advertising and propaganda (both of which are forms of magick.) It goes straight to the subconscious, and when your subconscious believes something is true, then you will begin to act as if it were true.

If you act as if it is true, then in accordance with "like begets like" you will cause it to become true.

How to get laid: an example

Have you ever noticed that when you are in a happy, committed relationship you frequently get attention from suitors, but when you aren't, all those potential lovers seem to vanish into the woodwork?

You guessed it -- it's magick at work. When you are in a good relationship, you feel desirable and wanted and behave in a way that signals your desirability to everyone around you. If you are single and lonely, the quickest and easiest way to solve that is to behave as if you aren't. All the attention you get when you don't need it will suddenly show up again.

This is the real purpose of getting all dolled up (whether you're a man or woman, it's the same) for a night on the town -- it's not really about looking attractive to other people, it's about feeling attractive and confident in your own head. Preparing for the evening is a magickal ritual. When you feel it, you send all the body signals to everyone that you are in fact desirable, and people around you will respond appropriately. You've probably noticed this from the other end: you know that person who, despite not being terribly attractive, turns you on? It is, indeed, magick.

And there you go. Class dismissed.
