According to this Globe and Mail article, a U.S. biotech company named Joule Unlimited received a patent for a genetically adapted E. coli bacterium which feeds only on carbon dioxide and excretes liquid hydrocarbons. That's right, its poo is diesel fuel, jet fuel and gasoline.
Supposedly, with this biotechnology, the company claims that it will be capable of delivering fossil fuels anywhere on Earth, in unlimited quantities and at an energy-cost equivalent of $30 USD a barrel. It will deliver, the company says, "fossil fuels on demand."
