According to this article on The Atlantic Wire, German designer Stefan Ulrich is preparing himself for the inevitable future dystopia, by creating giant white, blob-like robot pillows to spoon with: the Funktionide. While creepy and disturbing, the idea is to help stave off loneliness by appearing to be alive. If the video is any indication, the Funktionide does this well: it look like it's breathing; it responds to touch; it crawls; and it sounds like a Terminator is going to jump out of it.
According to Ulrich, "People already bury themselves in possessions and shield themselves from real life with technology. So if robots and objects can fulfill all their emotional needs as well, why do they need other humans?" Ulrich goes as far as thinking that his pillows may be a replacement for significant others. Even more disturbing is that he's probably right.
