Game journalist Jason MacIsaac has just about had it with the non-sense gamers have to face when dealing with The Final Boss. He argues, among other things, that The Final Boss shouldn't get stronger at the end of the battle, nor run away for the nth time just to come back later. So Jason has put together eleven tongue-in-cheek guidelines for game developers. He believes that if they start following these, a lot of the irritations and cliches of boss fights will vanish.
Boss fights like that are a pretty common experience for gamers. Iíll be happy if I never see one like that again.
Donít misunderstand me. Iím not calling for the abolishment of boss fights. Many of them are really quite fun. But rather than a satisfying climax to a section of gameplay, many of them end up being tedious, a bottleneck that prevents you from getting to the next enjoyable part of the game.
So I have proposed eleven guidelines for game developers. If they start following these, a lot of the irritations and cliches of boss fights will vanish.
