Rather than raising 10,000 animals in a metal shed, doped full of growth-promoting drugs, living in their own waste, serving as natural incubators for emerging diseases like swine flu and avian flu, a U.S.-based non-profit research organization, called New Harvest, is working to produce cultured meat -- grown from a cell culture, rather than harvested from an animal -- which has the potential to be healthier, safer, less polluting, and more humane than conventional meat.
