Hope is an often-tenuous thing. At the best of times it is a wonderful thing that can put the proverbial cherry on top of any event or situation. At the worst of times, Hope is a juicy promise of a better tomorrow that sticks with you while you're neck deep in trouble.
In this case, I had hoped this movie would have been a true underdog champ. Hope, like my car, were toast as soon as this movie was half done.
Hell Boy, starring Ron Perlman, and directed by some director dude named Del Toro. My hope died for this movie being a sleeper hit as soon as I realized this movie was simply lukewarm. It never simmered, over-boiled, or even flash fried. It just simply gave the same feeling of taking a bath in lukewarm water. You're so close to enjoyment, yet robbed by faulty plumbing.
The background story of this movie seemed such a great struggle. The director endured a six year struggle to fund this movie, battling the super duper Hollywood movie production giants to remain true to the original comic and at the same time secure Ron Perlman for the part of Hell Boy.
I cannot simply stress enough how this movie was simply not what it could have been. I myself am not a Hell Boy comic reader, so I was not giddy to see it. But the premise seemed fun enough to encourage seeing it. A good red demon fighting a nazi hoard to save the world. He has a big gun, and he seems to have some pretty cool friends with neat powers. In the end it seemed the plot of this movie was pretty passive with a few large holes in it.
What I also find is that the entire plot somewhat lazy and overdone. I haven't heard of a good old Third Reich enemy in a long while, not since the days of Indiana Jones. I had hoped to see more of them, but instead the good old WW2 Axis evil theme just seems to fall off the face of the earth after the first few moments of the movie. Instead we are stuck with "evil" and Rasputin, who is mysteriously alive on a WW2 era Scottish Island. I can hardly consider Rasputin a choice bad guy. He barely shows himself in the film and looks pretty gay with his "mecha-glove." It looks more like retro Nintendo Power Glove or an ancient relative of the Hitachi Magic Wand. He was simply too much of a cardboard cut-out.
To sum the plot up, Hell boy is a demon and he beats up monsters because he's good. Rasputin plays the big bad evil Russian magician who seems to be immortal. Hell Boy must stop him from releasing the end of the world brought on by the Seven Super-Size Calamari. Yay. To aid Hell boy, he has a cool looking fish guy who is the psychic extra-ordinaire named Abe Sapien, a pyrokinetic named Liz... oh, and some dude named Special Agent Myers. He really isn't special at all.
What I find most unappealing about the movie is that Hell Boy's friend Abe doesn't contribute much to the film, and should have really just been given the special power of blowing bubbles. Liz the pyrokinetic really seems to be Natural Gas girl with her ability to control blue flames. Plus she really only applies her powers effectively once. The worst addition of all is pasty white Agent Myers, who really is quite mundane and doesn't do anything cool, fun or say anything whitty. My wish is that he died a nice "Yeoman Johnson" death a la Star Trek.
I must say though that the one pillar of this film is the spotlight shy main actor, Ron Perlman. As Hell Boy, Perlman unequivocally delivered an acting piece that was as stalwart as a permanent Sharpie marker. When you have a Sharpie Marker, you know what its for, what it does, and that it does an excellent job. Perlman is truly the ideal "working class" actor who always delivers in the supporting role in movies. Perlman's claim to fame are based on his roles founded in heavy make-up and costumes. (He was in: Aliens 3, Beauty and the Beast, Enemy at the Gates) You could say he is faithful and reliable in his role and I think of no other person as the best choice to bring out the "come in an do my job, ho-hum" attitude of Hell Boy. Frankly I just wish Hell boy did more of that throughout the movie, and less focus on an overblown plot by the "evil" mastermind Rasputin and his Seven Gigantic Squid of the Apocalypse.
Upon reading a bit of the background, it seems that the actual comic background is much more tantalising than the movie. The characters are all pale in comparison to their comic counterparts. Hell Boy and his friends have a deeper origin and more history that validates them as excellent comic book characters. The plot would have been much more amusing if it had the Cyber Hitler from the comic book in it. So we could watch Hell Boy beat the snot out of Cyber Hitler with his own cybernetic leg. I myself am fascinated with the theme, story and nature of Hellboy. I just don't think that this movie had enough content to propel it to a sequel. I feel there is just not enough character development to make a solid impression on audiences to watch Hell Boy 2 or any other sequel. Much less float any post production merchandise or action figures.
See this movie if you're bored and on a cheap night. Otherwise you can get the same effect by sitting in a lukewarm bathtub.

I completely and utterly agree with you.
I should have Googled this first. Then I would not have seen it in the theatres. I would have seen it on video.
Thanks.
i completely and utterly think that you are DEAD WRONG!! i myself enjoyed hell boy. i thought it was quite entertaing. and it had some awesome action sequences. i think all you people who always agree with the critics are just lookin for acceptance. i mean, C'MON! it was a good movie! well, that is my opinion. good day.

Now here we have a classic example of someone who is intelligent and actually has something constructive to say. Thank you!
Well you're entitled to your opinion. I certainly don't agree with the critics on several films. Frankly I was pretty disappointed with Hellboy. It was a like a quiche that failed to rise.
ie. At one point the evil frauline smashes the fuse on big belt full of bombs and then smacks pasty Agent Myers in the face with the hammer to shut him up. He's all fine afterwards. Uh? Was she using a rubber mallet? Unless Agent Myers has the super power of having a neigh-indestructable face. That mallet that smashed the metal fuse would have rearranged his face nicely.
Its points like this that annoy me and literally take the bite out of the movie. I don't alway expect physical facts to always be there in a sci fi action. But if you're going to go super then go super and be consistent, not half-assed. After doing this review I'd rather read the Hell Boy Comics.
Those characters arn't as flimsy as the film's characters were.
the movie was good and entertaining but it seems to be steriotype..there where so many movies based on these kind of stories destroying the eveil and things like that.the director could have thought in a differnt angle and could have still improved on the climax ...and i also feel that other characters where not given much importance..well for the make-up it was simply amazing. the picturization was good.....well alltogether its a good movie for the kid's
From what you've said Shriya the movie was lackluster. But I thank you for the comment.
the movie was good and entertaining but it seems to be steriotype..there where so many movies based on these kind of stories destroying the eveil and things like that.
It was entertaining at least for a bit. Rasputin looked and acted like he came from the Badguy College of Ontario on his first co-op work placement. The evil calamari of doom were not a very convincing either.
the director could have thought in a differnt angle and could have still improved on the climax ...and i also feel that other characters where not given much importance..
Doesn't sound so good to me. So what was so good about it? Yes the make-up was great. But thats not a highlight of a movie that I go for. How far can makeup and prosthetics go to float a movie and make it appealing?
As for whether or not its a good kids movie. You'd have to ask them.
The other amusing thing about the movie were the banners that decorated the Scotish site at the opening. Did Hilter have a special Decor-Korps specially tasked to brighten up places with banners?
Considering it took 7 years for the guy to get his 'epic masterpiece' into movie form, I can't understand why it was edited like a sitcom. There were so many odd moments where I was left wondering what the hell was going on or why someone just did what they did, that I just about gave up.
It had been played up as an intelligent, witty take on the anti-hero, but all it was was half baked.
It'd make a good video rental for short attention span kids under ten (he he, big red guy, he he)
ive watched hell boy several times and i loved it one of the best comic book fims ive seen. it knocks spots off the hulk, daredevil and spiderman. this film is classic comic book fantasie, what its all about nothing serieous just good fun to watch and i hope there will be a sequal, it lends itself to a follow up.by the way i live in england and it has not been realeased he as yet but i believe when it does it will be a hugh sucess thanks
I certainly have to disagree with you on one regard...
it knocks spots off the hulk, daredevil and spiderman. this film is classic comic book fantasie, For Daredevil I wanted to claw my eyes out and stomp on them. But Spiderman was an excellent movie that had excellent depth for a comic book action movie. I could go on but frankly Hellboy has nothing on the Spiderman Movie. The Hell boy Movie was nothing more than flimsy representation of what the rich comic story is.
what its all about nothing serieous just good fun to watch and i hope there will be a sequal, I suppose anything is better than lackluster. Maybe they can cut it down to four years of production problems.
Either way, thanks for reading and posting a comment.
Rolo Quiche does not rise Soufle rises
we can only hope you are a better critic than you are chef.
Rolo Quiche does not rise Soufle rises I should know I have been cooking them for 34 years. we can only hope your ability to criticise exceeds your culinary skills otherwise you will be very hungry.
bye bye
Well congradulations on your efforts to cook for 34 years.
However this does not detract the fact that your comment is utterly useless to the general conversation of the quality of the film. On top of that it proves that there are still anal retentive people in this world who have nothing better to do than to post self serving commentary in a vain attempt to be witty. Not only that, but you posted it twice. Bravo.
As for your use of your royal "we"...
"We" at CoN can only hope that your ability to contribute to (much less follow) a discussion does not reflect on your ability to communicate with the outside world. Otherwise this would result in further ridicule on your behalf.
ok, so first, Rolo, you really need to lighten up. after every post you went and disected what they said and came up with some clever way to shoot them down. you say that we are all entittled to our opinions, then why do you continually try to prove people wrong.
Now on to the movie, i myself am a big fan of comic book/movie adaptations, all the way back to Superman. Batman was pure genius. although 2,3, and 4 were utter vomit. i expect number 5 to be even worse. I do agree with you about Spiderman, i grew on him and thought the story line and action were amazing. #2 was just soaked in plot line. which was very nastalgic of the comic. Speaking of nostalgia, it really took me back when MJ called Parker "tiger" in the first one. anyway back to the subject, Hellboy. i had never heard of him until the movie was released, with no background on the movie i found it very magnetic and thrilling. although the evil Rasputin problem was solved very quickly. other than that i found it to be exquisite.
"and that's all i have to say about that."
i will give a dollar to whoever can tell me what movie that is from.
In summary - if you want to see a film adaptaion of a comic ( I have never read the Hell Boy comics so dont hold it against me ) where you want to see the good guy win, the bad guys be bad, see a van travelling at 40mph be punched out of the way! then this is the movie for you.
If you want to watch a movie and try and find your inner child, you enjoy having to work out the complete plot yourself through hidden clues and references or you want hidden emotions touched then watch something else.
I was really hapy with this film as I think it actually managed to bring to screen what I always wanted to see from Comic's.
Who are they? what are their powers? Man this movie could have been good. There should have been more character details. Very dissapointed. but kewl characters.
Well thanks all for the comments so far...
Yes the characters were cool, but only superficially. I too have not read the comics, but from my aftermovie research I can say one thing. The comic has much more depth than this movie representation. Hence the disappointment.
If you want to watch a movie and try and find your inner child, you enjoy having to work out the complete plot yourself through hidden clues and references or you want hidden emotions touched then watch something else.
True this isn't a movie that will appeal to anyones emotions or certainly offer any intellectual stimulation. If you like a lotta CG with whiz bang effects then this is a movie to waste your hard earned cash on.
Rolo, you really need to lighten up.
I see no need to "lighten up". Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so to, is the freedom to post it here. As for proving people wrong, nope. I am just defending my point and my article. For further info, please read the following taken from the "ABOUT" => "LEGAL STUFF" section on CoN.
Batman was pure genius. although 2,3, and 4 were utter vomit. i expect number 5 to be even worse.
I agree Batman was a good representation, the sequels just remind me of the old TV series. Silly but fun movies. I shudder at the thought of #5. Applying this formula to Hellboy. Without a good first movie, there is not enough content to bother making a sequel.
Both Spiderman and Batman were in my mind true comic book adaptations. Yes indeed Spiderman 2 soaked in plot line but I find that that is important considering Spiderman is a very historic, and indepth comicbook character. Ideally even for those new fans that watch Spiderman 2, they at least will have a sense of the character of Spiderman is personable and has a interesting history. This is not so with Hellboy; the rest of Hellboys friends really didn't have much depth. Which is a shame. That movie didn't allow much in the way of showing how cool Hell Boy's friends are or much less how much of an integral part Agent Myers is. Heck I won't even get into the holes in the plot..
anyway back to the subject, Hellboy. i had never heard of him until the movie was released, with no background on the movie i found it very magnetic and thrilling.
To each his own, but thanks for the comment. I just can't believe they wasted two DVD's on Hell Boy. Perhaps the second DVD has all the plot they cut out.
I have to start out by saying I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments, but there are certain truths to both sides.
Hellboy is very much lacking in background and detail, but I think you are observing with a magnifying glass. It is just suppose to be bang boom, kill em all movie. However I do agree that I would have liked to have learned more info on the supporting roles, and wish they had a little more interaction in the plot.
All in all, watching the movie wouldn't have been worth watching if you don't have surround sound, as the movie does have great sound effects, but a weak story line.
Thanks
Hello to anyone even vaguely interested in continuing with this sharing of opinion's on Hell Boy.....
Rolo, I take it you like Spiderman/Batman etc so you are aware that comics are usually fantasy based and all fantasy based comics do not neccessarily follow the laws of reality and should not on any level be criticised in terms of ' that wasnt realistic' since its trying to be non realistic !!
I agree in that we should have continuity ie your hammer point but I was do busy looking at what Hell Boy was going to do after they had hit Officer Myers to really care whether Myers face should have caved in or not. I guess you could say thats artistic licence.
If you really want to criticise this film then Hell Boy does suffer from weak support characters, some holes in the plot and a weak main baddie but what does it offer as a positive? - CG that makes sense to the film, very sarcastic dialogue, a tremendous Hell Boy who carries this film so I think this is one of the best comic movies so far and I still put this up with Spiderman2, Superman, Blade and Batman in terms of enjoyment I felt at the end of the film - basically follow Red and enjoy the ride, thats what the film is gunning for.
In fact its far better than Spiderman 1 - in my opinion.
If you love comics for what they are, fantasy based heroism, freakish powers and the slightest reason to kick bad people where it hurts !, you will love this film. If that still doesnt work then think of the rubbish that has come out before Spawn, Masters of the Universe, Original Punisher, Captain Amercia, Generation X............
It all comes down to whether you enjoy this type of film or not and whether you enjoy your average good comic ( nothing too dark or light ) - I believe overall Hell Boy delivers in spades and I cant wait for the 2nd film as this I believe will start to fill in the blanks behind what Hell Boy is and what powers he has, more on his friends and potential enemies along with more depth all round since the introductions have now been made.
In my opinion Rolo, you left objectivity behind once you start using terms such as ' waste your hard earned cash on. ' - thats not constructive criticism or advice and anyway I think my money was as well spent on Hellboy as it was on Spiderman2.
ps Did you enjoy the English Paitent? because I didnt but that doesnt mean I am going to advise everyone else not to watch it - I appreciate the fact that others may enjoy it and also accept others may want different things from a film.
pps Ref: It just simply gave the same feeling of taking a bath in lukewarm water. You're so close to enjoyment, yet robbed by faulty plumbing.
what does a lukewarm bath have to do with faulty plumbing? Surely by the very nature you have a bath filled with water which at the very least is luke warm means that the plumbing works? In fact it seems this situation is soley down to the person who ran the bath and then waited till they could bathe in lukewarm water/or made sure they only got lukewarm water through cunning manipulation of the taps or another water source, to then just moan about it ; )
ppps Ref: I just don't think that this movie had enough content to propel it to a sequel. I feel there is just not enough character development to make a solid impression on audiences to watch Hell Boy 2 or any other sequel. Much less float any post production merchandise or action figures.
They do have action figures out and its doing well at the box office and a sequel in the offing - otherwise you were spot on.
To some extent I would agree that it has a weak bad guy, except of course that I am very big and true history. Rasputin was a real character and was in fact murdered in the way they say he was, when his body washed up on shore the next day there were no signs of the shootings or stabbings. After all he had been through he was confirmed dead by drowning. And thats BEFORE you enter the fantasy world of Hellboy. A evil do'er than can in fact b brought back to life. Sure Hellboy can kill him easily, but he is just as able to pop back up again and unleash more demons at the storywriters will. As far as the rest of the movie, Ron did a solid job of taking on the part of HellBoy, selma blair came off very bland, as did the FBI Special Agent, but those can be developed in other movies. Abe was in a supporting role and thats what he did, support. Not all characters are in depth in the first movie. The CGI were well done (something that Spider-Man can learn from). As for Spider-Man2 the CGI gave me a headache, not because they were there but because the coloring in them made them look very fake in many parts. Plus the BIGGEST problem with Spidy 2 is is taking off his mask to god and everyone. Yes in the comics he took off his mask every now and again, but was a headcase later becasue of it, yes I understand they are putting decades worth of comic info in to a few movies, and it aint easy, but please Hellboy and Spider Man have this in common, unless your willing to sit through a dozen movies at many hours apiece you arn't going to get the story line deserved to these characters, so you settle for what you can get and hope they make a sequle or three to further do the comics justice.
I tried avoiding this movie for the past year. I had a feeling it'd be nothing but special effects. My friend wanted to see it in theaters, I was able to avoid that. Months later (came out to video pretty quick too) he bought it and bugged me to watch it with him. Finally I gave in and saw the whole thing while nursing a hangover.
Now I'm not gonna be like some of these people and give out a 3 page essay on this movie. In fact, I'll simply say two things:
It wasn't as bad as I thought,
and Hulk was worse.
Amazing how all you guys are ranting about a movie. Especially Rolo. For one, you out here disgracing a movie that you couldn't put together to save your life, you honestly have no room to talk speakin that gossiping is all you can do, so i'll leave you to it.
Hell boy was a great movie, and like all movies it will have its flaws of reality. Somthing you idiots need to learn to enjoy once in a while. Thats the point of "MOVIES" they're not real..
Thats the point of "MOVIES" they're not real..
Exactly! This is just what I tell people about Passion of the Christ, but nobody wants to listen to me. In fact, it's when I say that, that's when I suddenly see WMDs suddenly pointed at me. Strange world we're in.
Man, some people take this crap too seriously. It's a frigging movie. If you would spend less time diesecting every single minut detail and simply watch it for what it is you might be able to enjoy it.
Oh, and that quote up there is from Forest Gump. you owe me a dollar.
Anyway, when I first saw trailers and such for hellboy I remember saying...wat kind of crap will they think of next? Uranus Man! My dad rented the movie a couple days ago and watched the first few minutes before he fell asleep (it was really late) but told me to rent it again because what he saw he liked. Reluctantly I rerented it and brought it back to watch with my dad.
I love it. They way they play hell boy off as if he's the Yeti or Lock-Ness is histericle. Random sightings and witnesses. Hell Boy's sense of dry humor is just perfect. It's like he is an everyday guy going to work and doing his everyday job that he finds only mildly entertaining at best. It could be better, but I am glad they took the approach with it they did rather than make it a big red karate movie or some crap.
Something you can't say very often is that an actor was born to play a single part, but in this case Ron Perlman was truely born to be Hell Boy. Many times during the movie i forgot i was watching a movie and actually understood exactly where he was coming from as if i was there with them. The part where he is talking to Liz and waves his hand in front of his face and says *I wish i could do something about this* you feel almost pity for him and his plight. Then he says i can promis you 2 things. 1 i will alwyas look this good, and it's right back to classic hell boy.
Can't complain about this movie at all. I like it better than SpiderMan to be honest. Spiderman was a little to whiney for me. But that is just ,my opinion to all you spidey fanboys.
the guy that wrote the reveiw is a cock and does not like to see small films go anywer... hell boy was frilling nice effects and that nazi wid the to sowrd like wepons oooooo shit hope to see more of him in hell boy 2... coz he will be back ... erm and my main point for the subject .. perlman was in alien resurection shit face not alien 3...peace peeps
I haven't seen this movie yet, but I'm going to eventually.
But seriously people, what's with all the superhero films. Batman started the idea, Spider-man and X-men followed through with some awesome films, and now we have Daredevil, Hulk, The Leagaue of E.G., Catwoman, Hellboy, Electra, and who knows what the hell next. I mean, wtf, do all these directors think they can keep dishing off half-baked movies based on comics nobody reads and has heard of (stfu, nerds, normal people really haven't) and expect them to be goldmines like Spider-man and X-men.
What's next, the Fantastic Four!? Don't make me laugh. Oh wait, dammit.

I bet it sucks just like the Mask 2 will. Please, seek therapy if you want to see the Mask 2. For the love of God...
